History of German Shepherds

The early German Shepherds were bred in the late 1800s in Germany. The breed was invented by crossing different dogs, including the Bavarian Mountain Dog, the Berger Picard, and the Beauceron. The goal was to create a dog that could herd sheep and cattle without tiring.

The first German Shepherd, Horand von Grafrath, was born in 1889. He was purchased by Captain Max von Stephanitz, who is considered the father of the breed. Von Stephanitz believed that German Shepherds should be bred for their working ability, not for their looks. He founded the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (SV), which is still the primary registry for German Shepherds today.

The SV began requiring all German Shepherds to be registered in order to be eligible for competition in 1901. In 1908, the first German Shepherd Dog show was held in Frankfurt am Main. By this time, German Shepherds had become popular not only as working dogs but also as companion animals.

German Shepherd dogs in World War I & II

In World War I & II, German Shepherds were used extensively as military dogs. They were originally bred for herding sheep, but their intelligence and loyalty made them perfect candidates for working with the military. German Shepherds served as sentries, messengers, and even helped to carry supplies and wounded soldiers on the battlefield.

During the war, the German Shepherd became one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Their popularity continued to grow in the years after the war, thanks in part to their heroic wartime service. Today, German Shepherds are still widely used as working dogs in a variety of fields, including law enforcement and search and rescue.

German Shepherd Physical Highlights

The breed has a strong, muscular body with a broad chest, strong legs and a deep chest. Its head is long and narrow, with a strong jaw and alert, pointed ears. The breed has a distinctive look with a medium-length coat that can be either straight or wavy and colours ranging from light tan to jet black. The German Shepherd also has a distinctive gait, with its rear legs driving powerfully off the ground and its hindquarters often appearing to be larger than its front legs.

Types of Coat

German Shepherd regularly comes in double-coated fur.  These furs are divided into 2 layers, topcoat & undercoat. These layers are responsible for protecting dog from sunlight during the summer and keep warmer during the winter.

Some German Shepherds also come into consideration because of their single-coloured fur. Technically, they are double-coated, but due to the thin undercoat, they are considered single-coated.

Pure single-coated German Shepherds are counted as a faulty breed which makes them rare and not recognized by the AKC.

Different Coat Colour

Most German Shepherd dogs are brown and black in colour. However, there are few other colours available in this breed.

The colours of dogs are fully dependent on their genetics, although there are some exceptions in this, like white and blue, which are considered as breed fault and not approved by AKC.

Various Types of German Shepherd Lines in India

Most German Shepherds look identical though few distinct features distribute them in 5 different lines.

1. American Show Line German Shepherds

  • They are popular for dog shows and judged based on their colour, height, temperament, and overall dog appearance.

  • These types of dogs make fine family dogs because they are highly disciplined and trainable and have a very eager temperament.

2. West German show Line German Shepherds

  • These dogs have the features and temperament of both the show dog and the guard dog, and that is why they are considered superior to the American Show Line.
  • This type of dog is very active and needs a lot of exercise and socialization skills. You have to train them to back off as they are very protective of their owner and always eager to fight.

3. East Working Line German Shepherds

  • These German Shepherds have the longest and the darkest coats, along with black sable, compared to all other GSDs.
  • This breed’s breeding requirements are extremely strict.

4. West Working Line German Shepherd

  • These types of dogs are considered smart as they can be aggressive or calm depending on the situation, which makes them a perfect choice for guiding.
